Artist Statement

Although anchored in representation, I deviate from the idea of fully rendered subjects, choosing to concentrate on the sensitivity and energy of colour, brushstroke and shape. The marks I leave out are just as important as the ones I choose to make.

After growing tired of graphic design work, I realized that I needed to return to the tactile expressive nature of painting where I feel most energized. I am drawn to the imperfection of loose, expressive mark making and unconventional colour palettes.

I’m interested in story-telling through portraiture and am captivated by the power and enigma of the gaze. My landscape and floral paintings are in direct response to the quiet, still experiential qualities of the natural world. My hope is that they embody these characteristics and act as a reflection in the experience of our inner landscapes.
